TOP FREE (or almost FREE) activities to do in New York City

Who says New York City is expensive? OK, I’ll admit it, sometimes, it can be. But if you wander far enough and look a little closer, you’ll discover jaw-dropping experiences for free or almost free. Here are my top low-cost experiences in New York City:

  • Roosevelt Island Tramway:

I’d dare to say this is one of my favorite discoveries in New York and an experience I never miss when I’m in the city. Head to 254 E 60th Street to hop on the Roosevelt Island Tramway, a cable car that glides across the East River to Roosevelt Island. Because it’s part of the city’s public transport system and used daily by locals, the fare is only $2.90, the same as a subway ride. This awe-inspiring experience allows you to fly across Manhattan’s skyscrapers, float above the river and land on Roosvelt Island. Once there, take a leisurely walk along the waterfront and enjoy some of the best views of the Manhattan skyline away from the city’s buzz.

  • Staten Island Ferry:

Who would imagine that one of New York’s most iconic views comes at absolutely no cost? Hop aboard the Staten Island Ferry and you’ll sail past the Statue of Liberty while taking in some of the best panoramic views of the Manhattan skyline, all completely for FREE. As it’s the ferry used by locals to commute back and forth to Staten Island, you can use that resource to enjoy a boat ride that delivers your bucket-list views.

  • Activities in Bryant Park:

A natural oasis tucked in the heart of Manhattan, it’s the perfect place to slow down. During warmer months, the park comes alive thanks to its wide range of free activities, such as movie nights, picnic performances or open-air sport sessions. To make sure you don’t miss anything, take a look at the park’s official website for a full list of events happening during your stay.

  • The Albertine bookstore:

Tucked inside the historic Payne Whitney mansion, you find this hidden gem in the Upper East Side. Renowned for its rich collection of French and English literature, the bookstore’s aesthetics are just as captivating as the books themselves. Contemplate its stunning stellar ceilings, majestic entrance and cozy atmosphere while you browse your next read or simply soak in this magical escape.

  • Brooklyn Heights and the Promenade:

One of New York’s most underrated skyline views can be enjoyed simply by taking a walk through Brooklyn Heights. Wander its playful and funny streets named after fruits, like Pineapple Street, Orange Street, and Cranberry street and contemplate it’s brownstones houses and timeless architecture. After exploring the neighbourhood, make your way to the Brooklyn Heights Promenade, where a peaceful waterfront stroll rewards you with some of the best city views.

  • Visit the city’s Rooftops:

What better way to see the city’s immense buildings than from one of them? Make sure to go up some free rooftop spots such as Pier 57 Rooftop Park or visit mSocial rooftop for some of the best views of Times Square from above.
